No serious college football analyst can avoid giving USC football very high grades after Week 2 of the 2024 season. The Trojans have been a little sloppy on offense but have looked like a very good team in their first two games. The same cannot be said for the Oregon Ducks, who led the Idaho Vandals of the FCS by only three points early in the fourth quarter — at home — in Week 1. Oregon then was fortunate to squeak by Boise State, 37-34, on a last-play field goal in Week 2. Beating Boise State is a win which will probably look good later in the season, but Oregon was very, very shaky in the process of beating the Broncos. Oregon has not played well overall in either of its first two games. Is that a team which should be ranked in the college football top 25 after Week 2? It’s a discussion worth having, so let’s have it.
USC, we think, should be ranked as a top-five team, given how well it has played thus far. We thought USC deserved to be No. 3 in the country last week after it beat LSU. We thought that Georgia deserved to be No. 2 after hammering Clemson, and that Notre Dame should have been No. 1 after beating Texas A&M on the road. We valued a road game over a neutral-site game. In Week 2, plenty of changes to the power structure were warranted, given the results which emerged across the country. Here’s our own version of a top 25 which is based on actual results, not on future predictions or projections. Keep that in mind. This is not about which team would be favored on a neutral field. It’s about what teams have done against the competition they have played, nothing else. Here we go:
25 — TIE, OLE MISS REBELS AND MISSOURI TIGERS
USA TODAY Sports Syndication – Columbus Dispatch
Ole Miss and Missouri have both trounced two cupcakes. It’s hard if not impossible to choose between the two, so we’ll just put them both at the very back end of the top 25. They are playing well, but they haven’t played anyone good. Other teams ranked higher on this list have beaten better opponents or — if not necessarily better opponents — have taken on tougher assignments such as neutral-site or road games. All of that goes into a weekly college football top 25 which is logical and fair.
24 — WASHINGTON HUSKIES
23 — OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
22 — UTAH UTES
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports
A home win over Baylor counts for more than the cupcake wins of Ohio State, Washington, Ole Miss, and Mizzou.
21 — NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
20 – SOUTH CAROLINA GAMEco*ckS
19 — SYRACUSE ORANGE
Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports
A solid win over Georgia Tech should put Syracuse in anyone’s top 25 this week.
18 — VANDERBILT COMMODORES
USA TODAY Sports Syndication — The Tennessean
Vandy’s win over Virginia Tech is worth more than two cupcakes.
17 — BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES
16 — IOWA STATE CYCLONES
Iowa State didn’t play a great game, but winning at Iowa is a high-end win. That’s worth a top-16 ranking.
15 — NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS
14 — PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS
13 — OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS
Oklahoma State Cowboys linebacker Mason Cobb (0) brings down Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson (5) during a college football game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys (OSU) and the University of Texas Longhorns at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022. Oklahoma State won 41-34.
USA TODAY Sports Syndication — The Oklahoman
Beating Arkansas is a decent win, but Oklahoma State played horribly and was lucky to win. We’re keeping the Pokes outside the top 10.
12 — ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
Decisive wins over Wyoming and Mississippi State are better than two cupcakes. ASU definitely belongs in the top 15.
11 — KANSAS STATE WILDCATS
Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports
The road win at Tulane against a good team vaults KSU into the top 15, almost the top 10. Tulane is going to be good under new coach Jon Sumrall.
10 — UNLV REBELS
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
UNLV watched Jayden Maiava transfer to USC and yet is blowing out opponents, one of them on the road. Few teams have looked better through two games, and few teams have exceeded expectations more through two games. Barry Odom is coaching the heck out of this program.
9 — ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports
Beating a ranked Kansas team puts Illinois in the top 10. Not a whole lot of teams have wins over ranked foes. Illinois does.
8 – CAL GOLDEN BEARS
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Cal went into Auburn and beat the Tigers, shutting down Hugh Freeze’s offense. Is Cal an ACC contender? We’re not sure. Is Cal in the top 10? Yes. That’s a better win than what most teams have through two games.
7 — WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports
Washington State, much like UNLV, looks awesome through two games. Next up: the Apple Cup in September (!) against Washington.
6 — MIAMI HURRICANES
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports
The win on the road at Florida is a tougher win than what a lot of teams have done so far. Even though Florida is not likely to be good, that’s still not a walk in the park in Week 1. We’re keeping Miami in the top six.
5 — NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES
4 — USC TROJANS
3 — GEORGIA BULLDOGS
People will say, “But wait, Georgia beat Tennessee Tech and USC did not play an FCS team! Why is UGA ahead of USC?” Because UGA didn’t just beat Clemson, but blew out Clemson. Had USC blown out LSU, it would be ahead of Georgia, but UGA stays ahead of USC for No. 3.
2 — TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS
1 — TEXAS LONGHORNS
Hopefully USC wins at Michigan. That’s our main focus here at Trojans Wire.
MARK ROGERS AT THE VOICE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL — THE TOP 25 THAT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE
Our friend Mark Rogers at The Voice of College Football puts out his college football top 25 every week, based on the same principles we use. It’s not about predictions, projections, betting lines, or national reputation. It’s results, strength of schedule, and performance (margin of victory). Reset the dial every week. It’s not supposed to operate the way most poll voters do, by having an established hierarchy which slightly changes from week to week and thereby builds in a bias toward teams which start the season in the top five (like Oregon). No. You assess teams on what they have done this year, nothing else. Oregon has not played like a top-25 team. USC has played like a top-five team. Rankings should reflect that. Be sure to subscribe to, like, and share Mark’s national channel and our own USC channel at The Voice of College Football on YouTube.
