A Cherry Puff Pastry

This cherry strudel recipe is a real crowd-pleaser! A can of cherry pie filling and some sheets of filo pastry are practically all you need to create this crispy, sweet dessert.

I’ve seen lots of easy strudels use puff pastry sheets, but the super thin layers of the filo dough all layered together make the flakiest, crispest outer skin that is practically perfect!

Here’s how to make it –

How To Make A Cherry Strudel

INGREDIENTS –

  • cherry pie filling – You can use whatever pie filling you’d like and use this recipe year-round! (Apple strudel is also delcious!!)
  • ready-made Filo Pastry dough – found in the frozen food section. (Also called Phyllo Dough.)
  • meltedbutter
  • medium-sized egg
  • confectioner’s sugar – optional

DIRECTIONS –

Prep The Layers – Place one sheet of filo dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the longest edge facing you, then brush it lightly with melted butter.

Lay the next sheet on top, then using a pastry brush, brush lightly with butter. Keep repeating this step until you have 5 layers of Filo dough On your final sheet, brush lightly with butter again.

Add The Filing – Place the cherry pie filling in the center third of the pastry dough. Be sure to leave a one-inch gap at the short ends.

Fold – Take the empty dough nearest you and gently fold over the cherry filling.

Fold – Fold the other side of the empty pastry dough over the top.

Egg Wash – Fold the ends underneath the strudel, then beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the egg over the top of the dough.

Vent It – Make a few slits in the dough with a sharp knife to allow the steam to exit while it’s baking.

Bake – Place the cherry strudel in the oven and bake it for about 15-20 minutes. The dough should be golden brown and crisp and the filling should be bubbling.

Chill – Let the strudel cool before slicing it into 8 pieces and enjoying.

You can dust your strudel with powdered sugar to make it even prettier, but this is totally optional.

Serving – You can either serve at room temperature or reheat for 1 minute in the microwave. It’s also lovely with vanilla ice cream and a little cinnamon!

  • Place one sheet of filo pastry onto the baking sheet, longest edge facing you, then brush lightly with melted butter. Lay the next sheet on top, then brush lightly with butter. Repeat until you have layered all 5 sheets of filo pastry. On your final sheet of pastry, brush lightly with butter again.
