INGREDIENTS IN GLUTEN FREE GRAVY

Ingredient amounts and full instructions are listed in the recipe card below.

All you need to make the best gluten-free gravy for your holiday meals is a few simple ingredients and 5 minutes of your time.

  • Gluten Free Creamy Chicken Soup Mix I used and recommend Vivian’s Live Again
  • Gluten free chicken broth or chicken stock
  • Unsalted butter you can use a vegan butter substitute to make it dairy free. I love Melt brand.
  • Pepper to taste

To make an extra flavorful gluten-free gravy, you can also add a few tablespoons of pan drippings.

I love that all of Vivian’s products are produced in a dedicated gluten free facility that is also free from eggs, nuts, milk, and peanuts.

Keep in mind that this particular mix (and most other cream soup mixes) does contain soy. I have a soy-free recommendation below.

HOW TO MAKE GLUTEN FREE GRAVY

  1. Pour chicken broth or stock into a small saucepan.
  2. Whisk in Vivian’s Live Again soup mix.
  3. Heat over medium heat, whisking frequently for a few minutes until it reaches a gravy-like consistency.
  4. Reduce heat to low and add the butter or dairy-free butter, stirring until you reach the right consistency.
  5. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Refrigerate any leftovers.

This homemade gluten-free gravy is so good, I promise you won’t miss traditional gravy at all. The whole family (and any guests) will love it even if they eat gluten regularly.

HOW TO STORE GLUTEN FREE GRAVY

Store leftover gravy in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.

HOW TO MAKE GLUTEN-FREE GRAVY THICKER

If you prefer a thicker gravy, make a slurry by whisking together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch or arrowroot starch with 1 tablespoon of water.

Gradually whisk it into the finished gravy and heat over medium until it reaches your desired thickness.

HOW TO USE LEFTOVER GRAVY

There are lots of ways to use leftover homemade gravy! One of my favorite ways is to add it to chicken noodle soup.

You can also add it to casseroles or warm it up to serve over leftover mashed potatoes.

Sometimes the gravy will get a gel-like consistency in the fridge and will retain that as you warm it up. To bring it back to a great texture, whisk in a little extra broth, water, or milk, and warm over medium-low heat while whisking.

CAN I MAKE THIS RECIPE SOY FREE?

This is the question I get asked the most, because Vivian’s and most other gluten-free soup mixes contain soy.

The only gluten free cream soup mix I’ve found is from Full Flavor Foods and I haven’t tested it with this recipe, but it might work!

Please let me know if you try it so I can pass along the info to my other soy-free readers.

PRO TIPS FOR HOMEMADE GLUTEN-FREE GRAVY

Sprinkle finished gravy with a little fresh thyme or parsley for a beautiful presentation.

If your gravy gets lumpy, try using an immersion blender to smooth it out.

For extra flavor, add a few tablespoons of pan juices from your meat.

FAQs

What is the best gluten-free flour to use for gravy? ›

Both Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1, (the blue bag) and Cup4Cup make a great gluten-free gravy. I have tried this recipe with a few other flours and haven't been impressed. So if you can't find either of these 2 brands, I do recommend using sweet white rice flour which comes from short-grain white rice.

What can you substitute for milk in gravy? ›

Unsweetened almond milk (especially barista styled almond milk and almond cooking milk), natural flavored full fat oat milk, and soy milk all make great substitutes for milk. Water is also a good substitute for milk in sausage gravy, though the color won't be as opaque as it would with a dairy free milk.

How do you thicken gravy for celiac disease? ›

Gluten-free plain flour or cornflour: This is simply to thicken the sauce so either works fine. Gluten-free stock: I make mine from 500ml of boiling water and 1x gluten-free stock cube. Any flavour works, be it beef, chicken, ham, turkey or veggie/vegan stock cubes.

Is it better to make gravy with cornstarch or flour? ›

Browning adds more flavor to the gravy and gets rid of the raw flour taste. You're basically making a roux. Cornstarch is a fine, white powder processed from the endosperm of corn. The endosperm is the nutrient-rich tissue inside the grain.
