Noom Med Review (2024) (2)
  • Prioritizes a balanced relationship with food
  • Uses a quiz to create a custom plan and estimated timeline
  • Weight, food and exercise logging tool to manage your health
  • $70/mo or $209/year with alternate options available
  • Over 45 million downloads and 45k+ 5-star reviews

Key Features

  • A personalized weight loss plan, based on an individual’s comprehensive health evaluation and lab results, is established during a 1:1 video call with a clinician.
  • If a person qualifies and it’s determined to be appropriate, the clinician may prescribe a weight loss medication that they believe is suitable for their needs.
  • Participants also complete the Noom behavior change curriculum, which includes progress updates with health coaches and regular check-ups with a clinician.

Introduced in May 2023, Noom Med is an addition to Noom Inc.’s personalized, behavior-focused weight loss program that incorporates biological aspects of weight loss through the addition of medications such as GLP-1s, which are a class of medication used to treat diabetes and obesity. These two aspects of Noom Med, which the company describes as “biology” and “psychology,” are intended to work in tandem to help people lose weight and sustain their weight loss. However, unlike Noom Weight, Noom Med is only available to those with a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27 or higher for those with a weight-related medical condition).

ProsCons
  • Combines behavioral change with the option of weight loss medications
  • Pairs users with a Noom-trained specialty clinician and health coach
  • Takes an individualized approach to weight loss based on lab results and a comprehensive health evaluation
  • Only available in 35 states currently
  • Cost of labs and medication not included in subscription price
  • Medication coverage depends on insurance provider, and can further increase monthly costs

Noom Med at a Glance

  • Cost: A Noom Med subscription costs an additional $49 per month on top of the subscription price for Noom Weight, which ranges from $70 per month to $209 per year. Additionally, individuals are responsible for covering the cost of labs required for a prescription as well as the cost of their medication, if prescribed.
  • What they offer: When appropriate, Noom Med will prescribe medications such as Zepbound, Saxenda, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Contrave, Metformin, Bupropion/Naltrexone and Topiramate. Certain qualifying users may also be prescribed additional GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Victoza, Trulicity, Rybelsus and Bydureon as well as the GLP-1/GIP medication Mounjaro. Additionally, Noom Med offers access to the classic Noom Weight behavior change program to support long-term weight loss. The program starts with a video visit with a clinician for an assessment and recommendations, and includes ongoing clinical support from a Care Team.
  • Who it’s for: Noom Med is available to adults age 18 and up who reside in an eligible U.S. state (currently, Noom Med is only offered in 35 states). To qualify, a person must have a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 and above with an obesity-related medical condition, such as diabetes or hypertension. A health evaluation, including comprehensive lab work, is necessary prior to starting the program.

How Does Noom Med Work?

With Noom Med, the process begins with completing a medical intake form, in which you’ll provide basic medical information with an emphasis on your weight history. Prior to scheduling a visit, it’s also necessary to provide Noom with lab work—this can be lab work you’ve had done recently that meets Noom Med’s requirements, or you can get a new set of labs ordered by a Noom clinician.

After that, you will meet with a Noom clinician via a video call. During this appointment, the clinician will complete an assessment and formulate their recommendations for your customized care plan, which may include a weight loss prescription medication if you qualify and are interested. Medications that Noom Med can prescribe include Zepbound, Saxenda, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Contrave, Metformin, Bupropion/Naltrexone and Topiramate. Additional medications, such as Ozempic, Victoza, Trulicity, Rybelsus and Bydureon, may also be made available.

Following the initial visit, users will receive ongoing support from their Care Team (clinicians and Care Coordinator), with check-ins on progress, care plan adjustments if necessary and additional recommendations as appropriate.

As an integration with Noom Weight, participants in Noom Med will also use the tools of the psychology-driven weight loss program. Through the Noom mobile app, the program provides a variety of tools and guides, as well as access to coaches, to help participants develop and maintain healthier patterns around eating, physical activity, sleep and stress management. For instance, Noom Weight includes daily lessons about well-being, as well as interactive challenges to maintain motivation. There’s also the option to use tracking tools to better understand your patterns, and you can connect with other members of the Noom community for accountability and support.

Noom Med is marketed as an enhancement of the company’s baseline Noom Weight program. As such, participants will pay a $49 monthly fee for Noom Med on top of their subscription charge for Noom Weight. The total cost will vary depending on which of the Noom Weight plans users sign up for, as seen in the table below:

Noom Weight PlanCost*

Participants should also note that some costs associated with Noom Med are not covered by their subscription. For one, it’s required to have lab testing done prior to scheduling a call with a clinician, but the cost of labs is not covered as part of the Noom Med subscription price. Medications, if prescribed, also are not included in the cost of a subscription.

Also of note is a $72 cancellation charge if you reschedule or cancel your appointment with a physician less than 24 hours before your visit.

What Experts Say About Noom Med

Noom Med’s combination of a behavioral weight loss program with weight loss medications is a promising pairing, says Melina Jampolis, M.D., an internist and board-certified physician nutrition specialist who specializes in nutrition for weight loss, disease prevention and treatment, as well as a Forbes Health Advisory Board Member.

Calling the medications “a game changer,” Dr. Jampolis also notes it’s necessary to “build the infrastructure of better eating, more regular exercise, better sleep and stress management” when working to lose weight and maintain that weight loss, which is what Noom Weight’s behavior program is intended to support. “The medication is a great tool, but it’s just that. It’s a tool, and you have to use the tool correctly, and it won’t work in isolation—maybe for a little while, but not for the long-term,” says Dr. Jampolis.

Medication shouldn’t be someone’s first stop in their weight loss journey, says Dr. Jampolis. She recommends first trying to lose weight for about six months without any medications before considering a prescription. Additionally, Dr. Jampolis notes that weight loss medications won’t work for everyone and carry the possibility of side effects. (Note that per Noom, “not every Noom Med [user] may want or need medication,” and for those who do qualify for medication, “patients work with their clinicians to make decisions about medication usage after being fully informed of the risks and benefits.”)

Noom Med: The Experience

As a newer offering, Noom Med itself does not have many publicly available user reviews. The company as a whole has received mixed reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

On Trustpilot, Noom has an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on more than 63,000 reviews as of January 2024. Many reviewers had positive things to say about the program, noting they’d been successful in losing weight using Noom. One reviewer described Noom as a “great teacher and motivator,” while another praised the app as “easy to use” and described the coaches as “so encouraging.” Many of the 1-star reviews stemmed from issues with customer service and difficulty with subscription cancellation.

These complaints also appeared in reviews on BBB, where Noom has an average customer review rating of 1.2 out of 5 stars based on over 500 customer reviews. A number of reviewers noted unexpected auto-renewal charges and challenges with canceling their subscription.
