Why has Radio 4 Extra gone off air? ›

On 26 May 2022, as part of planned cuts and streamlining with a greater focus on digital, the BBC announced plans to discontinue Radio 4 Extra as a broadcast station. It will be supplanted by BBC Sounds.

BBC Radio 4 Extra will be available on digital television using the same channel numbers as BBC Radio 7. Listen on Freeview and Freesat channel 708, Sky channel 0131 or Virgin Media channel 910. Some Freeview and Freesat viewers may need to perform a retune of their TV or set top box to update the channel name.

Radio 7 has become Radio 4 Extra.

Radio 4 Extra is the new name for Radio 7. Radio 4 Extra is an archive entertainment network broadcasting classic comedy, drama and features.

From April 2024, Radio 4 Arts programmes will be grouped on BBC Sounds under an Umbrella Arts brand, ensuring that commissioned documentaries are more readily discoverable online.

In May of 2023, it was announced that the BBC would stop scheduling separate content for Radio 4 on long wave and this is expected to happen at the end of March 2024. As mentioned, DAB is digitally transmitted sound. As it doesn't use radio waves, it can be regarded as a broadcast channel, just like on your TV. A DAB+ radio is a receiver for these channels. It lets you switch between radio stations instead of having to scan for the exact wavelength (FM) that matches your location.

Radios 1,2,3,and 4 each came into existence at 5.30 a.m. 30th September 1967. Until then the BBC broadcast the Light Programme (light music and entertainment and now Radio 2), the Home Service (News and current events, now Radio 4) and the Third Programme (Classical music, now Radio 3).

According to Nielsen's Q3 2023 Total Audience Report, radio remains the most popular media in America, reaching 84% of the population aged 18+.

BBC Radio 4 had 9.2m listeners with 5.7m tuning in for The Today programme (Mon-Sat). BBC Radio 5 Live posted a reach of 4.9m listeners. BBC Radio 1Xtra had 786k listeners, BBC Radio 4 Extra had 1.5m, BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra had 971k, and BBC Asian Network had 542k.

The average age of the Radio 4 listener is 56 years old and skews towards an older audience. Our target audience of 35-54 ABC1 (commonly termed 'replenishers') makes up 24% of the audience. The station also continues to have an upmarket bias – 75% of those tuning in fall into the ABC1 demographic.

A loss of pre-set stations usually happens with battery radios when the batteries have run out and are not changed promptly. Having changed the batteries, re-memorise the stations you need. It is coming to the end of its life as a technology. With the continued migration of listening from Longwave to other platforms offering enhanced quality listening such as FM, DAB and online, it is anticipated that the Longwave service will cease at some point in the future.
